Privacy policy

fastest-scan is an app that scans the pages of a book or a document, with the camera or from a video, and makes a PDF. Jayson Reis ("we") makes the app. This policy tells what the app does with your data.
Your scans stay on your phone
- Your scans stay on your phone. The app sends no picture, no video, no page, and no PDF to us or to Google.
- The app connects to no server of ours, and we have no user accounts. The app sends no data to us.
- After a scan, the app shows a small ad banner of Google AdMob. The ads are "limited ads": Google does not use personal data to personalize the ad. The app does not use the advertising ID.
- To show an ad, Google gets some data from your phone, for example the IP address. The section "Ads" lists this data.
Your scans
-
The camera. The app uses the camera only on the camera screen, for a scan. Android asks you for the permission "Camera". You can refuse it and scan a video.
-
A video. You choose a video in the app, or another app opens or shares a video with this app. The app reads the video on your phone. It does not change the video.
-
The pages. The app makes the pages on your phone. The scan code of the app has no network code.
-
The PDF. The pages and the PDF stay in the app until you send them:
- "Save PDF" saves the PDF at the place that you choose.
- "Share" gives the PDF to the app that you choose.
- "Attach PDF" gives the PDF to the app that asked for a file.
The app keeps the PDF of "Share" in its cache folder until your next scan. It keeps the PDF of "Attach PDF" until the next "Attach PDF".
-
The pages of the last scan. The app keeps the pages of the last scan in its cache folder. So the pages come back when Android makes the screen again, for example after a change of the dark theme. The app deletes these files when you start a new scan or tap "New scan", and when the pages screen closes for good, for example after "Attach PDF". It deletes the files of a scan with no change for 7 days at a later start of the app. Android can delete them when the phone has little free storage.
-
Settings. The app keeps its settings on your phone: the torch mode, the settings of the settings screen (the page layout, the fingers, the quality, the date in the name of the PDF, and the default name of the PDF), and the setting "limited ads" for the ads SDK.
-
No backup. The app turns off the backup of its data to the cloud and the transfer of its data to a new phone.
-
Remove the app. Android then deletes all files of the app on your phone. A PDF that you saved or shared stays at its place.
Debug test builds
Debug builds can turn ads off for a memory test. This prevents a new SDK start.
An SDK that already runs stays on until Android stops the app.
Only a debug build has "Keep a video of the scan". This option starts off at each app process start.
If you turn it on, the app saves a camera scan video on your phone. "Share video" sends it only to the app that you choose.
A release build, also on a Google Play test track, has no option to keep a scan video.
Ads
The app shows ads of Google AdMob. The Google Mobile Ads SDK of Google ("the ads SDK") loads and shows them.
Where the app shows ads:
- Only on the pages screen, after a scan, when all pages are done.
- Never on the camera screen, during a scan, or in the page viewer.
- Never when another app uses this app: not when another app asks for a PDF ("Attach PDF"), and not for a video that another app opens or shares with this app. On these screens, the app does not start the ads SDK. When the ads SDK runs from an earlier scan, it stays on.
When the ads SDK runs:
- The app starts the ads SDK only when the pages screen of a scan shows. Before that, the app sends no data to Google. One exception: a message of the ads SDK that failed with no network can go to Google later, when the network comes back, also when the app is not open.
- After its start, the ads SDK runs until Android stops the app.
- With no network, the app shows no ads. The scan works the same.
The settings of the ads:
- Limited ads for all users, in all countries. Google does not personalize the ad: no advertising ID, no ad profile, and no personalized ads. Google still uses some data, for example the IP address, to deliver the ad.
- No personalized ads. Each ad request also tells Google to turn off the personalization of ads.
- No advertising ID. The app removes the permission for the advertising ID. So the ads SDK gets no advertising ID and sends none.
- Ads for all ages. The highest content rating of the ads is "G" (general audiences).
- No crash reports of the ads SDK. The app turns them off.
- No consent dialog. The app uses limited ads for all users, and Google allows limited ads with no consent dialog.
Limited ads do not stop all data. When the ads SDK runs, it sends this data to Google:
- the IP address of your phone. Google can estimate your general location from it, for example the city;
- the app set ID. This ID is the same for the apps of one developer on your phone. It is not the advertising ID. Google Play services can reset it, for example after 13 months with no use;
- if they apply, IDs related to the accounts that are signed in on your phone;
- taps, app launches, and video views;
- diagnostics, for example the start time of the app, the hang rate, the energy use, and samples of the errors that the ads SDK catches;
- data about the ad request, for example the app, the type of network, and the software version of the phone.
Google uses this data for advertising, analytics, and fraud prevention. The ads SDK sends it to Google, not to us. Google also uses cookies and local storage on your phone, only to find invalid traffic, for example fraud. The ads SDK keeps its own files in the storage of the app: the app set ID, its settings, and a cache of its web view.
Google uses the data as its own policies say:
- Google Privacy Policy. It names the Google company that is responsible for your data where you live.
- How Google uses information from sites or apps that use our services
- The data of the Google Mobile Ads SDK for Android
- Limited ads
The permissions of the app
The app has five permissions. Android asks you only for CAMERA. It gives the
others at the install, with no question.
| Permission | Why the app has it |
|---|---|
| CAMERA | The camera gives the pictures of a scan. |
| INTERNET | Only the ads SDK uses the internet, to load the ads. |
| ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE | The app checks network access before it reserves ad space. The camera library and the ads SDK also read network state. |
| READ_BASIC_PHONE_STATE | The ads SDK reads the type of the mobile network and the software version. |
| DYNAMIC_RECEIVER_NOT_EXPORTED_PERMISSION of the app | A library of Android (AndroidX) uses it, so that only this app can send some messages to the app. No other app can get it. |
The app has no permission for your location, your contacts, your files, or the advertising ID.
Children
The app is for users of 13 years and older. The ads are for all ages. The app does not ask for your age.
How long we keep data, and how we protect it
- Your scans. They stay on your phone, in the folders of the app, until the app or Android deletes them (see "Your scans"). The pages, the PDFs of "Share" and "Attach PDF", and the settings are in the private storage of the app. Other apps cannot read them, other than the app that gets a PDF from you.
- The data of the ads SDK. The ads SDK sends it to Google over an encrypted connection (TLS). Google keeps it as the Google Privacy Policy says. We do not get it.
- Your e-mails. We keep support messages only as long as necessary for support, fault correction, or legal obligations.
- This website. Cloudflare hosts this page. It processes your IP address and technical request data to deliver and protect the page. We add no analytics script, cookies, advertising, or third-party fonts to this page. Read the Cloudflare Privacy Policy for its data practices.
We have no other data about you.
Your choices
- Use the app with no network: you get no ads, and the app sends no data to Google while it has no network.
- Remove the app: Android deletes the files of the app on your phone.
- Google Privacy Policy tells how you can see and control the data that Google has.
Your rights
The data protection law of the European Union (GDPR) and similar laws give you rights for the data that we have about you: your e-mails to us and website request data. You can:
- get a copy of this data (access);
- tell us to delete it;
- object to its use;
- complain to the data protection authority of your country. The European Data Protection Board lists these authorities: Our members.
To use a right, write to santosdosreis+apple@gmail.com. For the data of the ads SDK at Google, the Google Privacy Policy tells how to use your rights with Google.
Contact
Write to santosdosreis+apple@gmail.com with a question about this policy, or to report a bad ad. When you write to us, we get your e-mail address and your message. We use them only to answer you. The legal basis: our legitimate interest to answer your message (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
In the app, "About the ads" has the button "Report an ad". It opens an e-mail to santosdosreis+apple@gmail.com in your e-mail app. The subject has the name and the version of the app. The app does not send the e-mail: you can change it, send it, or delete it.
The iOS app
This policy covers Android. The iOS app has no ads and has its own privacy policy.
Changes
We change this policy when the app changes the data that it uses. The date at the top shows the version.
